Google has rolled out a major set of Gemini-powered artificial intelligence (AI) features in Gmail, marking the beginning of what it calls the “Gemini era.” The update introduces AI Overviews to enhance Gmail’s search and email summary experience, especially for long email threads. The company has also unveiled a new AI-powered inbox that automatically highlights priority emails and important to-do items.
Most of the new features are available to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers, though some have been extended to all Gmail users. Initially launching in the US in English, the features will expand to more regions and languages in the coming months. AI Overviews now enable Gmail to answer natural-language questions directly below the search bar, making it easier to find information without scrolling through emails. This feature is currently limited to paid users, while the email thread summarisation tool is being rolled out to all users.
Google has also enhanced email composition with AI tools like “Help Me Write,” which assists in drafting and refining emails and “Suggested Replies,” which provides context-aware reply suggestions. These tools are available to all users, while advanced proofreading features remain exclusive to paid plans. Additionally, Google is testing a new AI Inbox that displays urgent emails and tasks requiring immediate attention, such as meetings and important bills. This feature is currently available to select testers, with a wider rollout expected in the coming months.
