The year 2025 marked a major shift in artificial intelligence as several breakthrough AI products moved from research labs into everyday public use. Major tech companies reshaped how people interact with AI through new tools focused on images, video, browsing, and advanced reasoning.
In August 2025, Google launched Nano Banana as part of its Gemini 2.5 family. Officially called Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, the model became popular for its ability to generate and edit images using simple text prompts. Integrated directly into the Gemini app, Nano Banana allows users to modify photos, add multilingual text, and change objects or backgrounds. Google also added SynthID watermarking to track AI-generated images.
OpenAI introduced the Sora mobile app, turning its text-to-video AI into a consumer tool. Users can create videos up to 60 seconds long using text prompts or reference images. In December 2025, OpenAI partnered with Disney in a $1 billion deal, allowing licensed characters from Pixar and Star Wars to appear in Sora-generated videos. Sora launched on iOS and is expanding to Android, with built-in social sharing.
Perplexity AI launched Comet, an AI-powered browser for Windows, macOS and Android. Built on Chromium, Comet includes an integrated AI assistant that summarizes pages, answers questions and explains content directly within the browser blending search and browsing into a single experience.
Google released Gemini 3, its next-generation multimodal AI family, including Pro, Flash and DeepThink versions. Gemini 3 Pro focuses on advanced reasoning, while Gemini 3 Flash offers faster responses and powers Google’s AI Mode for summaries and AI search. The models are available through Google Cloud and mobile Gemini services.
Meta reorganized its long-term AI research under Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), led by Alexandr Wang. The lab focuses on advanced AI systems, large-scale models and infrastructure aimed at developing AI that could eventually exceed human-level intelligence.
