

Researchers at Northwestern University have developed an innovative drone called ‘Phantom Twist’ that can become extremely difficult for the human eye to detect while flying. Instead of relying on special camouflage or transparent materials, the engineers designed the drone to exploit motion blur. The entire body of the drone can spin up to 25 times per second, causing its distinct shape to blur into a faint haze that is far less noticeable to the human eye.
Unlike a conventional quadcopter, Phantom Twist uses a single motor and propeller. The propeller rotates in one direction while the rest of the drone spins in the opposite direction. This means there are virtually no stationary parts for the eye to track. According to the researchers’ visibility measurements, the optimized drone is about 10 times less visually perceptible than a conventional quadcopter. However, it is not completely invisible—the propeller remains audible, while some wires and support rods can still be seen.
Potential Applications in Wildlife Research
The technology could prove useful in wildlife monitoring because conventional drones can disturb birds and animals simply by being visible. A low-visibility drone could help researchers observe nesting birds, survey wetlands and study wildlife with less visual disruption. It could also have applications in environmental surveys and infrastructure inspections.
Artificial intelligence and optimization algorithms played a key role in developing the drone. The Northwestern team initially generated roughly 20,000 stable-flight configurations and used computational methods to identify designs that minimized visibility from different viewing angles. The researchers then tested promising designs against real-world backgrounds before building the final prototype. Future versions could incorporate more transparent materials and quieter propulsion systems to make the drone even harder to notice.
