Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince has stated that Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming the workforce and could make several corporate roles obsolete in the coming years. In an opinion piece published in The Wall Street Journal, Prince revealed that most employees affected in Cloudflare’s recent layoffs belonged to “measurer” roles such as middle management, finance, legal, auditing and revenue recognition teams. The company recently laid off nearly 20 percent of its workforce, around 1,100 employees, while citing AI-driven organisational restructuring.
Prince explained that modern AI systems are now capable of analysing organisational performance with greater speed, accuracy and efficiency than human employees. However, he noted that “builders” like engineers and “sellers” such as sales teams remain comparatively secure for now as the company continues hiring in growth-focused departments. Cloudflare’s decision reflects a wider trend across the global tech industry, where companies are increasingly linking layoffs to AI adoption. Reports suggest over 49,000 AI-related job cuts have already been recorded in the United States this year, raising concerns about the long-term impact of automation on employment.
