Character.AI, the artificial intelligence (AI)-powered social app, has introduced a new interactive feature called Stories. Unlike the Meta Stories feature, this format allows users to play out fictional tales with their favourite characters based on a chosen premise and genre. The Stories format enables AI-led storytelling where users make frequent decisions that drive the plot forward. Notably, this is the first new format designed specifically for users under 18.
In a blog post, the California-based AI startup explained the feature in detail. Character.AI is an AI-driven platform where users can create AI avatars inspired by fiction or real life. Users can directly interact with these avatars or engage through various formats. Most previous interactive formats were text-based role-playing games (RPGs), where users type in the chat box and AI responds or creates scenarios. The new Stories format expands the platform’s offerings.
Stories are described as a structured, visual, multi-path storytelling format that maintains momentum while allowing users to guide the direction of the story. Users select two to three pre-created characters, write a premise, choose a genre, and the story begins. The AI generates a complete story, prompting users to make choices that influence the plot.
Stories are replayable, allowing users to explore different branching plots and endings. Created stories can also be shared with other platform users. Character.AI ensures that the feature includes all safety measures for under-18 users, marking the first format created for minors. The company added, “Stories represent an important step in our long-term strategy to build the future of AI entertainment and evolve the platform through multimodal, AI-driven experiences.”
