Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that major technology platforms must function within India’s constitutional framework and respect the country’s cultural context. His remarks came during the AI Impact Summit, where global technology leaders gathered to discuss emerging artificial intelligence trends and regulations.
He emphasized that platforms such as Google’s YouTube, Meta, X, and Netflix must comply with stricter rules requiring the removal of unlawful content within hours of notification. The government is also pushing for stronger regulation of deepfakes and harmful AI generated material, with active consultations underway with industry stakeholders.
Globally, governments are increasing pressure on social media companies to act faster against illegal and harmful content, demanding greater accountability and tighter oversight. The move reflects a broader international push to ensure safer digital ecosystems while balancing innovation with responsibility.
