Chinese tech giant ByteDance has launched Doubao 2.0, an upgraded version of its most widely used AI application, aiming to generate both domestic and global attention during the Lunar New Year period. The move comes after the unexpected global rise of DeepSeek last year, which surprised Silicon Valley with a high-performing yet cost efficient AI model.
ByteDance says the new model is built for the “agent era”, where AI systems are expected to handle complex, multi step real world tasks instead of simply answering queries. The company claims its advanced version rivals capabilities from OpenAI and Google while significantly lowering usage costs. Its recently released video-generation model also gained viral attention on X, drawing praise from users, including Elon Musk.
Doubao currently leads China’s AI chatbot market in weekly active users, according to data from QuestMobile. However, competition is intensifying as Alibaba invests heavily in promotions to attract users to its own AI platform. The latest developments signal an accelerating AI race among Chinese tech companies seeking both innovation leadership and market dominance.
