Google has introduced a new artificial intelligence feature called Audio Summaries for Google Docs. Powered by Gemini, the feature allows users to listen to short, human-like audio summaries of their documents instead of reading lengthy text. Unlike traditional text-to-speech tools, Audio Summaries use natural conversational narration to provide a quick verbal overview of a document’s contents. Google says the feature can summarise even long reports and multiple tabs into concise audio clips that typically run for a few minutes.
The feature is part of the latest Google Workspace updates and is currently available only to paid subscribers, including Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Google AI Ultra for Business add-on, Google AI Pro for Education add-on, and Google AI Pro and Ultra plans. Users can choose from different voice styles such as narrator, persuader, or coach, and adjust playback speed or skip sections. The summaries are expected to remain grounded in the document’s content without adding external information. However, Google has clarified that there are no separate admin controls for organisations at this time.
