Apple Pay is reportedly preparing to enter the Indian digital payments market, with a possible launch in October. According to reports, the service could initially roll out with Axis Bank credit cards, allowing users to make contactless payments through their iPhones and Apple Watches at point-of-sale terminals. Apple is also in discussions with other major banks, including HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank.
At launch, Apple Pay may not support UPI, although reports indicate that the company could add the feature at a later stage. UPI currently dominates India’s digital payments ecosystem, while Apple Pay’s initial card-based model would focus on contactless transactions using tokenised card details. If UPI support is eventually introduced, Apple Pay could offer iPhone users a broader payment option in India.
