Anthropic has announced significant changes to its subscription plans for Claude Fable 5, its most advanced consumer AI model, with the revised policy taking effect on July 20. Under the new structure, Claude Max and Team Premium subscribers will continue to have access to the model, but their usage will be limited to 50% of the previous allowance. Meanwhile, Pro and Team Standard subscribers will lose subscription-based access and must use API-based pricing after exhausting a one-time $100 usage credit provided by the company.
The move signals Anthropic's shift from unlimited subscription access to a usage-based pricing model, driven by increasing demand and higher computing costs. The company has repeatedly delayed the implementation of these restrictions while expanding its computing capacity. Industry observers also see the decision as a response to intensifying competition from rivals such as OpenAI, which recently introduced GPT-5.6 Sol, and emerging Chinese AI companies offering competitive and cost-effective alternatives. Anthropic is also reportedly exploring major infrastructure partnerships to support future AI growth.
