Alibaba Unveils Qwen 3.8 Max AI Model

Chinese technology giant Alibaba has launched the preview version of its latest flagship large language model, Qwen 3.8 Max, marking another major step in China's rapidly expanding artificial intelligence ecosystem. According to the company, the model features 2.4 trillion parameters and delivers performance comparable to the world's leading frontier AI models, ranking behind only Anthropic's Claude Fable 5. Developers can currently access the preview through Alibaba's coding platforms, Qoder and QoderWork, while an open-weight version is expected to be released soon.

The launch comes as Chinese AI companies intensify efforts to compete with leading US firms such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. Unlike many proprietary AI systems, China continues to promote an open-source approach, enabling developers to download, modify, and deploy AI models freely. Alibaba's announcement follows the recent launch of Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, another high-performance AI model. Meanwhile, Alibaba's Qwen models are expected to gain wider adoption after reports that Apple Intelligence in China will integrate AI technologies from Alibaba and Baidu instead of relying on ChatGPT or Google's Gemini.
