AI Fuels Rising Cyber Frauds

Cybercrime has emerged as a major threat to India's digital economy, with experts warning that rising online fraud could hinder the country's goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. According to Union Home Ministry data, cybercriminals caused losses of ₹22,495 crore in 2025 and ₹22,845 crore in 2024. The rapid expansion of digital payments has been accompanied by an increase in digital arrest scams, investment frauds, ransomware attacks, and AI-powered deepfake crimes. Organised cybercrime networks operating from the Myanmar–Laos–Thailand Golden Triangle and the Cambodia–Thailand border are reportedly targeting Indian citizens.

Experts have called for a comprehensive five-point strategy to strengthen India's cyber defence. The recommendations include making cybersecurity a national priority, improving real-time coordination among government agencies, integrating cyber awareness into education and employee training, expanding cyber forensic expertise, deploying AI-based threat detection systems, and strengthening international cooperation to dismantle cybercrime hubs in Southeast Asia. They stress that stronger cybersecurity measures are essential to safeguard India's growing digital economy.
