Growing public concern over artificial intelligence is reportedly leading to an increase in security threats against executives and researchers working in the AI industry. According to reports, companies including OpenAI and Anthropic have enhanced security measures after receiving threats ranging from online abuse to alleged assassination plots. Rising fears over job displacement, economic disruption and the broader societal impact of AI are believed to be contributing to the hostility directed at AI leaders.
Several incidents have highlighted the seriousness of the threats. Reports state that an individual allegedly attempted to target OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, while another person reportedly entered Anthropic's office and followed an employee. Anthropic has also reported cases involving alleged threats against employees and their families, as well as warnings of armed violence over customer service issues. Reports further indicate that online threats targeting AI executives and data centres have increased significantly in recent months, prompting technology companies to invest heavily in security. Surveys in the United States also suggest that public concern about AI now significantly outweighs positive sentiment.
