AI Cameras to Track Traffic Violations

Motorists violating traffic rules by riding without helmets may no longer escape fines, according to researchers at the Applied AI Research Centre of IIIT Hyderabad. They have developed an AI-powered camera called ‘Dashcam’, which is installed in traffic police vehicles. The camera captures vehicle number plates of traffic violators while moving on roads. Once connected with traffic police and transport department databases, details of violations are automatically sent to the challan system.

To evaluate the performance of the Dashcam, researchers installed the cameras in four Innova vehicles operated by traffic police stations in Hyderabad and monitored them for six months. The device was developed at a cost of around ₹8,000-₹10,000 and delivered satisfactory results, researchers said. Following suggestions from traffic officials, three cameras are also being tested on two-wheelers to identify violations more effectively.
