According to Matthew Prince, the internet has reached a historic milestone, with bot-generated traffic surpassing human traffic for the first time. The Cloudflare CEO revealed that the rapid growth of AI-powered agents accelerated the trend much earlier than expected. While he had initially predicted the crossover would occur in 2027, the increasing adoption of autonomous AI systems pushed bot traffic ahead of human activity in 2026.
Cloudflare's latest data indicates that bots now account for 57.5 percent of internet traffic, compared to 42.5 percent generated by humans. The surge is largely driven by AI agents that perform tasks such as comparing prices, browsing websites, collecting information, handling customer service interactions, and assisting users online. Experts believe this marks a major shift in how the internet is used, with AI increasingly acting on behalf of users. However, human users continue to dominate overall engagement through activities such as streaming, social media usage, and app interactions.
