As the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 draws closer, former India cricketer Yograj Singh has questioned the exclusion of Shubman Gill from the Indian squad announced by the BCCI. The tournament is set to begin on February 7, and Gill’s omission has surprised many, especially considering his role as the vice-captain in the T20 format. While selectors cited his recent lack of form, the decision has sparked debate across cricketing circles.
Speaking on the issue, Yograj Singh asked why a player like Gill was dropped after just four or five poor innings. He pointed out that several players continue to remain in the team despite performing well only in a handful of matches over extended periods. Emphasising the need for backing young talent, Yograj Singh cited the example of Kapil Dev, who was supported by then captain Bishan Singh Bedi despite struggling in Pakistan, and was later taken on the England tour. He stressed that players like Abhishek Sharma should also be given consistent support rather than being judged hastily.
