The exclusion of India’s ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill from the T20 World Cup 2026 squad has surprised many in the cricketing fraternity. While chief selector Ajit Agarkar stated that team balance was the reason, experts believe Gill’s poor recent form played a major role.
Reports suggest that Gill’s name triggered intense discussions within the BCCI selection committee. Although Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir were reportedly in favour of Gill, three selectors opposed his inclusion, citing his unsuitability for the T20 format at present.
With the majority against him, the selectors had no option but to leave Gill out. He was reportedly informed of the decision just minutes before the official squad announcement. Gill’s lack of form 291 runs in 15 innings this year without a single half-century appears to have significantly influenced the final call.
