VVS Laxman’s presence at the selection committee meeting for the New Zealand T20 series and India ‘A’ squads at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati has drawn attention. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the decision was taken during a comprehensive review meeting held at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai last month. He explained that the Centre of Excellence has complete information about players’ injuries and fitness status, and Laxman will now attend all selection meetings to ensure there is no communication gap between the selectors and the Centre of Excellence.
Saikia said there have been instances in recent times where players were included in squads but had to withdraw from tours at the last minute after failing to regain full fitness. He said the new system is aimed at permanently preventing such situations. According to Saikia, the move is not merely about transparency but also about providing selectors with accurate fitness data, enabling them to make better-informed decisions while selecting squads.
