Wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s hopes of competing in the 2026 Asian Games were dashed after she lost in the semifinal of the selection trials held on Saturday. Competing in the 53 kg category, she was defeated 4-6 by Meenakshi Goyat in a closely contested bout. Both wrestlers gave a strong fight throughout the match, but Meenakshi eventually secured victory and advanced to the final.
Vinesh had earlier fought a legal battle with the Wrestling Federation of India to participate in the trials, even approaching the Supreme Court to secure her entry. Following her defeat, she expressed her frustration, stating that she was not just fighting opponents but also the system, and claimed she was denied justice. She also said she would make a comeback, though she did not specify her next competition. Vinesh had previously won a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games.
