Young Indian cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi may have to wait longer for an opportunity in the playing XI, judging by captain Shreyas Iyer’s recent remarks. Speaking at a press conference ahead of the five-match T20 series against New Zealand, Iyer praised Sooryavanshi’s exceptional talent but stressed that the youngster still has plenty of time to establish himself at the international level. He pointed out that the current opening combination has been performing consistently and includes batters who played a key role in winning the World Cup. Iyer added that travelling with the team and gaining exposure to overseas conditions could help Sooryavanshi learn how to handle different pitches and prepare better for future tours.
Iyer also spoke about the team’s preparations, saying that a busy match schedule leaves limited time for practice, but the focus remains on winning and maintaining a positive mindset. He expects New Zealand pitches to offer assistance to fast bowlers, although the actual conditions will become clear only on match day. Discussing the bowling attack, Iyer highlighted Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s experience, particularly in the absence of a senior pacer such as Jasprit Bumrah. He noted that Bhuvneshwar’s experience in the IPL and his understanding of T20 bowling could prove valuable in guiding younger players and strengthening the team’s performance.
