Team India’s WTC Hopes on the Line Against Sri Lanka

Team India’s WTC Hopes on the Line Against Sri Lanka

After a long break, Team India is set to return to Test cricket with a crucial two-match series against Sri Lanka. The first Test begins on August 15 in Galle, followed by the second Test in Colombo from August 23. The series is part of the ongoing 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, making every session and every result highly significant for India. The team currently finds itself in fifth place in the WTC standings and needs a strong comeback after losing the Test series in England and suffering a 2-0 defeat to South Africa at home.

India have nine Tests remaining in the current WTC cycle, and winning all of them would take their points percentage to 74.07. However, the road ahead is challenging, with two Tests against New Zealand away from home followed by a five-Test home series against Australia. With the competition for the WTC Final intensifying, India cannot afford to drop points in Sri Lanka. A strong series win would keep their qualification hopes alive, while a poor result could leave the Shubman Gill-led side with an extremely difficult path to the final.
