Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has urged Team India’s batters to take greater responsibility while chasing targets following their 24-run defeat against West Indies in the fourth T20I at Hyderabad. Gavaskar felt the Indian batting line-up should have performed better on the batting-friendly surface at the Uppal Stadium. Despite Sanju Samson providing an impressive start, India failed to capitalise on the momentum. Gavaskar pointed out that Abhishek Sharma’s inability to deliver a significant innings at the top of the order affected the chase. He also observed that Ishan Kishan fell into Keemo Paul’s bowling trap, while Shreyas Iyer has struggled to produce another major innings since scoring a century in the opening match. According to Gavaskar, India must improve its batting approach and show greater responsibility during run chases to achieve consistent results.
However, Gavaskar defended India's relatively inexperienced bowling attack, acknowledging that the bowlers had not performed to expectations but emphasising that young players would learn from their mistakes. He expressed confidence that the experience gained from such matches would help them improve. Meanwhile, former Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara praised West Indies captain Shai Hope for his composed and controlled approach to batting. Pujara said Hope's clear understanding of match situations and ability to control the tempo of an innings made it difficult for Indian bowlers to put him under pressure. His assessment highlighted the challenges India faced against the West Indies skipper during the series.
