Smriti Mandhana taking over as India women’s captain after Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down has sparked considerable discussion about the team’s leadership transition. Harmanpreet, who became India’s captain in 2016 and led the side for nearly a decade, decided to relinquish captaincy across formats following a BCCI review meeting. Mandhana, who made her international debut in 2013 and has established herself as one of India’s leading batters across formats, had served as vice-captain and was widely regarded as the natural successor. The change has also renewed debate over whether the transition should have happened earlier.
Reports have claimed that there may have been differences of opinion between Harmanpreet and Mandhana over leadership, although neither player has officially confirmed such reports. Former captain Mithali Raj had previously suggested that Mandhana could have been handed the ODI captaincy earlier, while also discussing the possibility of giving the T20I leadership to a younger player. With Harmanpreet now continuing as a player, greater responsibility will rest on her batting, while Mandhana will have to manage the leadership transition and maintain team unity. How the two senior players work together under the new arrangement will be closely watched.
