India’s women’s cricket team is set to enter a new phase as star opener Smriti Mandhana prepares to make her debut as full-time T20I captain in the three-match series against Zimbabwe, beginning on Friday. Although Mandhana has led India in a few matches when Harmanpreet Kaur was unavailable, this series will mark a significant milestone in her leadership journey. Harmanpreet has stepped down from the captaincy but will continue to play for the team under Mandhana’s leadership. India’s batting lineup looks strong, with Mandhana, Harmanpreet, Shafali Verma, Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma among the key players. The series will also provide an opportunity for young players such as Anushka Sharma, Niki Prasad and Kamalini to push for places in the playing XI. India’s spin and pace options will pose a challenge for Zimbabwe, led by Josephine. Shafali Verma has been appointed vice-captain and said the team is focused on playing fearless yet intelligent cricket as it prepares for future challenges.
Shafali said the team has held discussions about its goals and understands the responsibilities of individual players. She added that India aim to improve with every series, keeping next year’s Champions Trophy in mind. Speaking about Harmanpreet Kaur, Shafali credited the former captain for playing a significant role in the development of Indian women’s cricket and helping the team reach its current position. Shafali also said she is working on improving her batting consistency, fitness and mental strength. The series against Zimbabwe will therefore be an important opportunity for Mandhana to establish her leadership approach while India assess their combinations and give players a chance to strengthen their positions in the team.
