Shock for Alcaraz as US Open Title Defence Ends

Defending champion and world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz suffered a major setback at the US Open after losing his quarterfinal clash to American youngster Ben Shelton. In a thrilling battle that lasted nearly four and a half hours, Shelton defeated Alcaraz 6-7, 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (10/7) to book his place in the semifinals.

Alcaraz, returning to Grand Slam action after recovering from an injury, won the opening set in a tiebreak but struggled to maintain his momentum. Shelton took the next two sets before Alcaraz fought back to level the match. However, Shelton held his nerve in the deciding fifth set and sealed a memorable victory. He will face Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals. With Jannik Sinner absent due to fitness concerns and Novak Djokovic already eliminated, Alcaraz’s exit has opened up the title race.
