Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has responded for the first time to the match-fixing allegations surrounding his team's dramatic 3-2 victory over Egypt in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16. Argentina, the defending champions, staged a remarkable comeback after trailing 2-0 to secure a place in the quarter-finals. However, the match became the centre of controversy after disputed VAR decisions, prompting some Egyptian players and team officials to allege that the tournament had been manipulated in Argentina's favour.
Reacting to the accusations, Scaloni firmly rejected the claims and said they were being spread by people who do not want Argentina to win the FIFA World Cup for a second consecutive time. He added that such criticism only strengthens the team's determination and serves as extra motivation for the players as they continue their title defence.
