England's star batter Joe Root shone in the fifth Test of the Ashes series. Thanks to Root's magnificent century of 160 runs, England scored 384 runs in their first innings. Root, who had been out of form in the last few innings, proved his mettle with this performance. He steadied the innings by adding 169 runs for the fourth wicket with Harry Brook and 94 runs for the sixth wicket with Jamie Smith. However, due to a quick fall of wickets towards the end, England could not cross the 400-run mark.
Australia, who started batting afterwards, also played aggressively. Opener Travis Head came close to a century with 91 runs. Labuschagne was dismissed after scoring 48 runs. At the end of the second day's play, Australia's first innings score stood at 166/2. Ben Stokes took two wickets for England. The match is expected to become even more exciting on the third day.
