Indian para-athlete Rinku Hooda delivered an inspiring performance at the Para Asian Games, winning a gold medal despite enduring personal loss and physical challenges. The Haryana-born athlete was devastated by the death of his mother in August, but he remained determined to compete for his country. He returned to training just two weeks after her passing, although a shoulder injury forced him to take a 20-day break. After recovering, he resumed his preparations and went on to secure gold. “I was deeply hurt by my mother's death, and I am still grieving. I wanted to win gold for her, and I dedicate this medal to her,” Rinku said, expressing the emotional significance of his achievement.
Rinku's journey in sports is equally remarkable. He lost his left hand in an accident when he was just three years old, but never gave up his passion for athletics. While helping his father with agricultural work, he also participated in state-level running competitions during his school years. His coach, Amit Kumar, encouraged him to take up javelin throwing, a decision that helped shape his sporting career. Rinku began making his mark with a gold medal at the 2015 Youth Asian Games. He later won silver at the World U20 Para Athletics Championships, bronze at the 2018 Asian Para Games, and silver at the 2022 edition. He finished fifth at the 2024 Paralympics. His latest achievement reflects his resilience, dedication, and determination to overcome adversity.
