Indian badminton stars PV Sindhu and the celebrated doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy / Chirag Shetty made a strong start at the Singapore Open on Tuesday. Sindhu defeated fifth seed Putri Kusuma Wardani of Indonesia 21-17, 21-18 in the women’s singles first round to secure her place in the next stage of the tournament.
In men’s doubles, Satwik and Chirag battled past Malaysia’s Chen Zi and Presley Smith 26-28, 21-15, 21-1 to enter the second round. However, the rest of the Indian contingent suffered early exits. Ayush Shetty, Unnati Hooda, Arjun/Hariharan, Simran/Kavipriya, Shikha Gautam/Ashwini Bhat, and mixed doubles pair Ruthvika Shivani/Rohan Kapoor were knocked out in their respective opening-round matches.
