Indian badminton star PV Sindhu has expressed sadness at missing Bathukamma celebrations this year because of her tournament schedule. The shuttler, who is currently abroad to compete in the Denmark Open Super 750, shared photographs on Instagram from last year’s celebrations with her husband. She wrote about missing the festival’s vibrant colours and flowers, highlighting her affection for the traditional Telangana celebration.
However, a social media user criticised a photograph in which Sindhu was holding a silver Bathukamma. Responding to the comment, she asked people to understand a tradition before forming opinions about others. Sindhu explained that Bathukamma was not a festival traditionally celebrated on her parental side of the family, making last year’s celebration her first. After marrying into a family from Karimnagar, Telangana, she took part in the festivities and personally spent the entire day arranging a large floral Bathukamma. She added that the silver Bathukamma was a loving gesture from her mother-in-law, who warmly welcomed her into the family’s tradition. Sindhu’s response highlighted the importance of respecting cultural practices and recognising the affection behind family traditions.
