Former India opener Virender Sehwag has backed young batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi, saying that age should not become a barrier to his selection for the national team. Sehwag believes that players should be considered for the senior side based on their performances rather than their age. He praised Suryavanshi’s current form and aggressive approach, noting that the youngster shares his own desire to attack from the very first ball. However, Sehwag also pointed out that the key question is when Suryavanshi will get an opportunity to represent India and how many matches he will be allowed to play.
Sehwag explained that age is an important consideration in age-group cricket, where players compete within specific categories. However, he believes the same criterion should not be applied to players being considered for the IPL or the senior Indian team, particularly when they have already demonstrated their ability on the field. Citing Virat Kohli, who is 37, and Suryavanshi, who is 15, Sehwag stressed that performance should be the deciding factor regardless of age. His comments have renewed discussion about the young batter’s potential pathway to senior international cricket.
