Australia have announced their squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against India, starting October 19, with some big changes and fresh faces.
Regular captain Pat Cummins has been rested as he continues his recovery from lumbar bone stress, preparing for the all-important Ashes series later this year. In his absence, Mitchell Marsh will take charge of the side — another sign of Cricket Australia’s growing confidence in his leadership abilities.
The major highlight of the squad is the return of 29-year-old Matthew Renshaw, who has been recalled to the ODI setup after nearly three years. Although Renshaw was earlier part of the 2022 tour of Pakistan, he didn’t get a chance to make his ODI debut.
Renshaw’s domestic form made it impossible for selectors to ignore him. The Queensland batter piled up 350 runs at an average of 50 last season and recently impressed with knocks of 80, 106, and 62 against Sri Lanka A. His comeback adds depth to Australia’s batting lineup as they prepare to face a strong Indian side.
The pace department will be led by veterans Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, supported by Xavier Bartlett and Ben Dwarshuis, giving the Aussies both experience and new energy.
Alex Carey will skip the first ODI in Perth to play for South Australia in the Sheffield Shield and will also miss the T20Is to focus on Ashes preparations. Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell remains unavailable for the T20I series following wrist surgery last week.
India will be led by young star Shubman Gill, who has taken over as ODI captain from Rohit Sharma, marking a new chapter for the Men in Blue.
The ODI series will be followed by five T20Is, for which Australia has also announced a 14-member squad for the first two games.
Cricket fans are eager to see how Renshaw’s comeback pans out and whether Marsh can inspire Australia to a series win in India’s backyard.
