Former India selection committee chairman Sandeep Patil has shared insights into the decisions involving senior cricketers such as Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Gautam Gambhir and Zaheer Khan. Speaking about his tenure from 2012 to 2016 on Doordarshan’s The Great Indian Cricket Show, Patil explained the considerations behind decisions concerning senior players. He said the selection committee had to balance the continuation of experienced cricketers with opportunities for emerging talent, keeping the future of Indian cricket in mind. He also clarified that the decisions were not his alone but were taken collectively by the five-member selection panel.
Patil emphasised that personal friendships with players should never influence selection decisions. While it is natural for selectors to develop personal bonds with cricketers, he said they must set those relationships aside when performing their official duties. Selecting a player simply because of friendship would be inappropriate, as the team’s interests must always come first. He acknowledged that selectors sometimes have to make difficult and disappointing decisions, but stressed that their primary responsibility is to safeguard the long-term interests of Indian cricket. His remarks have renewed discussion about the balance between personal relationships, impartial selection and the future of the national team.
