India ODI captain Shubman Gill has made it clear that the team will have little room for experimentation as the ODI World Cup approaches. Speaking after the third ODI against the West Indies, Gill said that the players who are likely to be part of India’s World Cup squad will be given regular opportunities from the next series. India had entered the West Indies series without several key players and the bowling attack looked weakened in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel. Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna also suffered an injury during the second ODI.
Gill admitted that the frequent absence of frontline bowlers has been frustrating, as India has not been able to field its preferred bowling combination. However, he added that such situations also provide opportunities for new bowlers to prove themselves. Gill pointed out that India’s bowling during the powerplay and at the death was a major concern in the West Indies series. He explained that failing to make an impact with the new ball makes it difficult to take wickets in the middle overs, which in turn allows opposition batters to build big totals. According to Gill, this was one of the major reasons for the high scores recorded during the series.
