Brazilian football icon Neymar Jr. has officially retired from international football after Brazil's heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Norway in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16. The match, played at MetLife Stadium, marked the end of an extraordinary international journey for the legendary forward. Neymar came off the bench and converted a late penalty, but Brazil's early World Cup exit could not be prevented.
The retirement carries special emotional significance as MetLife Stadium was also the venue where Neymar made his Brazil debut and scored his first international goal in 2010. Over a remarkable 16-year career, he represented Brazil in 130 matches, scoring a record 80 goals and providing 59 assists. Neymar retires as Brazil's all-time leading goalscorer, leaving behind one of the greatest international careers in the nation's football history.
