India made a strong start to the five-match T20 series against New Zealand by chasing down a challenging target against the visitors’ pace attack. Opener Sanju Samson set the tone with an impressive 67, while Naman Dhir delivered a crucial unbeaten knock of 42 off just 15 balls to guide India to victory. Notably, despite having played only six T20 internationals so far, Dhir has maintained a strike rate of over 285, highlighting his explosive batting ability. Samson praised the young batter for staying composed under pressure and taking on New Zealand’s bowling attack at a decisive stage of the match.
India captain Shreyas Iyer said Dhir’s performance had given the team more options in player selection, adding that the batter could also contribute with the ball. Dhir’s 42 not out, which included four boundaries and two sixes, also reportedly surpassed a record set by Irfan Pathan in 2009. Pathan had scored an unbeaten 33 against Sri Lanka in Colombo while batting at No. 7 or lower. Dhir’s performance underlined his potential as a valuable option for India in the lower order.
