Mirabai Chanu Says Asian Games Competition Could Match Olympic Level

Indian weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu has said that the competition at the upcoming Asian Games could be no less challenging than the Olympics. Chanu, who has won medals at the Olympics, World Championships and Commonwealth Games, is still searching for an Asian Games medal. She finished ninth in 2014 and came close to the podium in 2023, finishing fourth, while an injury kept her out of the 2018 edition. Chanu believes the strongest competitors in her weight category are from Asia, making the upcoming event particularly demanding.

The 32-year-old is determined to finally add an Asian Games medal to her collection. She said she returned to her training centre immediately after the Commonwealth Games and has set her sights firmly on winning a medal in the Asian Games. Chanu previously competed in the 49kg category but will move up to 53kg this time, following the removal of the 49kg weight class from the 2028 Olympic programme. Her focus now is on preparing thoroughly for the tougher Asian competition and returning home with a medal.
