Former India captain Mithali Raj has called for a leadership change in the Indian women's cricket team. She recommended appointing Smriti Mandhana as captain for Tests and ODIs, while suggesting that the T20 side should be led by a young player. Mithali said emerging cricketers such as Shafali Verma or Jemimah Rodrigues could be considered for the T20 captaincy.
Mithali also raised concerns over the fitness of current captain Harmanpreet Kaur, stating that her recurring fitness issues have affected the team's consistency and planning. She added that India's early exit from the 2026 ICC Women's T20 World Cup has intensified discussions on leadership. Mithali urged selectors to adopt a long-term vision while building the future of the Indian women's team.
