Defending champions Argentina booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals after defeating Switzerland 3-1 in extra time in a thrilling quarter-final clash. However, one of the biggest talking points of the match came when captain Lionel Messi was involved in a verbal exchange with Portuguese referee João Pinheiro, with videos of the incident quickly spreading across social media.
The incident occurred when Switzerland were preparing to take a free-kick and the referee instructed Messi to move back in accordance with the laws of the game. Reports said Messi objected to the referee's tone, telling him to speak respectfully and not treat him disrespectfully, while insisting that he had addressed the official with respect. Frustrated after being denied a goal by Switzerland's disciplined defence, Messi's emotions were evident. Argentina eventually sealed a 3-1 victory through extra-time goals from Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez, securing a place in the semi-finals.
