Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has explained the reasons behind Jasprit Bumrah’s underwhelming performance in IPL 2026. The star pacer has struggled this season, taking only 4 wickets in 13 matches, which significantly impacted MI’s campaign as they failed to qualify for the playoffs.
Jayawardene revealed that Bumrah had been dealing with a minor niggle since the T20 World Cup, which affected his rhythm and pace. Although he was given adequate rest before the IPL, it took time for him to regain full fitness and consistency. He added that while Bumrah has recently regained his pace, managing the injury impacted his sharpness and wicket taking ability.
Despite the low wicket tally, Bumrah maintained the best economy rate among MI bowlers at 8.36. Jayawardene noted that opposition teams played him cautiously while other bowlers failed to build pressure from the other end. He assured fans that Bumrah is now fully fit and motivated, and is expected to make a strong comeback.
