Reports suggesting that Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Pat Cummins might not be fully available for the opening matches of the IPL are generating considerable interest. Cummins, who sustained a back injury during a Test match against the West Indies, subsequently played only one Test during the Ashes series against England. He also missed out on the T20 World Cup. Consequently, reports suggest there is a possibility that he could miss the first few matches of the IPL season.
With Cummins' availability in doubt, discussions are ongoing regarding who would lead the team on an interim basis. Although reports have surfaced suggesting that either Travis Head or Abhishek Sharma could take up the captaincy, Ishan Kishan's name is also being mentioned in the conversation. Ishan successfully led Jharkhand to victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Following Sunrisers Hyderabad's acquisition of him for ₹11.25 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction, there is now active speculation regarding the possibility of entrusting him with the leadership responsibilities.
