The Para Asian Games opening ceremony was held on Sunday, with India’s contingent drawing attention through its distinctive blazers inspired by the country’s 5,000-year-old civilisation. Sprinter Simran Sharma and star badminton player Pramod Bhagat led the Indian team during the march-past while carrying the national flag. The outfits featured golden motifs inspired by ancient Indus Valley seals, along with other traditional designs. The “Sapta Sindhu” symbol on the collar and the tricolour emblem on the pocket highlighted India’s cultural identity. The Paralympic Committee of India described the blazers as a tribute to the nation’s rich heritage.
India has fielded a 168-member contingent comprising 112 men and 56 women, competing across 11 sports at the event. Around 3,000 athletes from 45 countries are participating in the Games, which run until October 24, according to the provided report. Indian para-athletics head coach Satyanarayana said the team was aiming to win 100 medals and expressed confidence in the athletes’ preparation. At the previous Para Asian Games in Hangzhou, India secured a record 111 medals, comprising 29 gold, 31 silver and 51 bronze. The contingent will now look to build on that achievement and deliver another strong performance.
