New Zealand Cricket has announced the use of Sonic technology in Decision Review System (DRS) decisions during the ongoing series between India and New Zealand. The advanced sound-analysis technology is designed to help the third umpire determine more clearly whether the ball has made contact with the bat. It is expected to provide additional audio evidence when reviewing close decisions, particularly in cases where a faint edge is difficult to detect.
According to New Zealand Cricket, the technology is being used to improve the accuracy and consistency of DRS decisions. By analysing sounds associated with the ball and bat, Sonic technology can provide additional information to assist the third umpire during reviews. Its use reflects the continuing adoption of technological tools to support decision-making and minimise errors in international cricket.
