India won the toss and elected to bowl first in the opening match of the five-match T20I series against New Zealand. Speaking at the toss, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer said the team wanted to assess the fresh pitch and understand how much bounce it offered. He added that the players had adjusted to the local conditions and time difference and were ready for the contest. Reflecting on the recent series against the West Indies, Iyer said India had learned valuable lessons from batting on high-scoring pitches and bowling on smaller grounds.
India made two changes to its playing XI, with Nitish Kumar Reddy replacing Shivam Dube and Mayank Yadav coming in for Prince Yadav. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner said his team would also have chosen to bowl first had it won the toss. He described the pitch as fresh and said the squad was excited about the series. Santner also praised the potential of Bevon Jacobs as a powerful batter. The match marks the beginning of the five-game T20I contest between the two sides.
