India Dominate Day 1 in Galle

Team India made an impressive start to the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, taking control of the opening day with a strong batting display. After winning the toss and electing to bat, India finished Day 1 on 288/2 in 73 overs. Devdutt Padikkal was the star performer, remaining unbeaten on 131 off 178 balls, while KL Rahul scored a composed 77 before retiring hurt. The day was also interrupted by rain, limiting play to 73 overs.

Padikkal, returning to Test cricket after 2024, showed excellent composure and confidence at No. 3. He reached his maiden Test century in 134 balls and played a crucial role in India's progress. His partnership with Rahul was particularly important, with the pair adding 150 runs. Rahul handled the Sri Lankan spinners effectively and brought up his half-century off 127 balls before leaving the field after experiencing discomfort. Yashasvi Jaiswal was the first wicket, run out for 32, while captain Shubman Gill was dismissed for 16. Padikkal then continued his charge alongside Rishabh Pant, who was unbeaten on 27 at stumps. Padikkal's century also made him the first Indian batter to score a Test hundred on Independence Day.
