India are heading into the Hockey World Cup with captain Harmanpreet Singh’s fitness emerging as a major factor. The drag-flick specialist has dealt with hamstring, lower-back, ankle, wrist and finger injuries over the past two years. Although he initially watched a penalty-corner session from the sidelines, Harmanpreet later joined the team’s high-intensity games, easing concerns about his fitness.
Harmanpreet’s importance has increased because penalty corners remain a crucial source of goals for India. However, improved defensive strategies have made conversions harder. India are therefore developing alternative specialists, with players such as Jugraj Singh, Amit Rohidas, Rajinder Singh and Sanjay getting opportunities. Harmanpreet is also working on new drag-flick variations, speed and strength. Despite a recent dip in his scoring numbers, India will hope their captain delivers when it matters most.
