Indian men’s cricket has had iconic captains such as Sourav Ganguly and MS Dhoni, but in women’s cricket, Harmanpreet Kaur’s leadership has played a similarly transformative role. After taking charge, she helped India develop the confidence to compete strongly against leading teams such as Australia, England and South Africa. Her tenure also culminated in India’s historic ODI World Cup triumph. Harmanpreet’s aggressive batting mindset influenced the team’s approach, while greater emphasis was placed on fitness, player selection and building a stronger support system. With the backing of the BCCI, the women’s team gradually developed greater depth and competitiveness.
Her leadership also coincided with the emergence of several talented players, including Shafali Verma, Richa Ghosh, Jemimah Rodrigues, Kranti Goud, Shri Charani, Nandani Sharma, Sneh Rana and Amanjot Kaur, while senior players such as Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma continued to make significant contributions. Harmanpreet played a crucial role in India’s World Cup campaign, particularly in the semifinal against Australia and the final against South Africa. India also enjoyed strong performances in tournaments such as the Asia Cup and Asian Games. Although the team still needs greater consistency to match Australia and England over the long term, the transformation under Harmanpreet’s leadership is significant, leaving behind a lasting impact on Indian women’s cricket.
