The Indian women’s cricket team created history by lifting their maiden ICC Women’s ODI World Cup trophy after defeating South Africa in the 2025 final on Sunday. The emotional moment reached its peak when skipper Harmanpreet Kaur tried to touch ICC Chairman Jay Shah’s feet while receiving the World Cup trophy — a gesture of respect that quickly won hearts across the cricketing world. However, Jay Shah humbly stopped her, acknowledging her incredible leadership and India’s historic achievement.
Harmanpreet, whose leadership was under scrutiny after three consecutive losses earlier in the tournament, silenced all critics with her brilliant captaincy and composed batting performances during the knockout stages. Jay Shah, known for introducing reforms like equal pay for women cricketers, shared the podium moment with pride and admiration for the Indian captain and her team.
After the final, Harmanpreet spoke about how the team’s mindset changed following their narrow defeat against England in the league stage. “That night changed a lot for us. Everyone came together with strong focus and belief. We visualized, meditated, and prepared harder than ever before. This victory means everything,” she said, adding that the celebrations would go on all night. The skipper also emphasized that this triumph is just the beginning of a new era for Indian women’s cricket.
