Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has recalled being impressed by Virat Kohli’s talent during India’s 2008 ODI series against Sri Lanka. In a recent interview, Harbhajan said he recognised Kohli’s potential early in his international career and believed the young batter could go on to break Rahul Dravid’s records. He particularly remembered Kohli’s performance against Sri Lankan mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis, who was enjoying an impressive run at the time. According to Harbhajan, Kohli’s ability to score a half-century against a challenging bowler demonstrated his exceptional talent. He also noted that Kohli made significant improvements to his game in the following years, driven by a strong desire to succeed and an extraordinary hunger for runs.
Harbhajan also praised Kohli’s contribution to improving fitness standards and fielding in Indian cricket. He credited the former India captain with helping transform the team’s approach to fitness and raising expectations of athletic performance on the field. According to Harbhajan, Kohli’s commitment to the game and determination to win remain central to his approach. Kohli has established himself among the most prolific batters in ODI cricket, ranking second only to Sachin Tendulkar on the all-time list of ODI run-scorers. He currently represents India in the ODI format, continuing to draw attention for his consistency, fitness and competitive spirit.
