Former Australia All-Rounder Moises Henriques to Captain Portugal

Former Australia all-rounder Moises Henriques has been named captain of Portugal as the team begins its campaign to qualify for the 2028 T20 World Cup. Henriques will lead Portugal in the Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier C, which is being held in Finland from August 14 to 20. Portugal are aiming to qualify for the T20 World Cup for the first time.

Henriques, who was born in Madeira, Portugal, has considerable international experience, having played four Tests, 16 ODIs and 24 T20Is for Australia. Madeira is also the birthplace of football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo. Henriques last represented Australia in a T20I against Bangladesh in 2021 and has since completed the ICC-mandated three-year stand-down period required to switch international allegiance. Portugal will face Israel, Germany, Greece and the Czech Republic in the qualifying tournament, with the winners progressing to the European regional final and the top two teams from that stage advancing to the global qualifier for the 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
